Hey you. Yeah, you - you forgot something.
Some of you may have "procrastinated' packing for several months while others of you have been sitting pretty for weeks - but all of you have forgotten a few unexpected goods.
If you were expected a "packing list for Baylor" or some comprehensive catalog of contemporary college collectibles, then you're in the wrong place.
Actually, scratch that - let me go ahead and refer you to several great resources right here to make sure you have everything you need to make the big move. Then we'll get to my list.

Nathan's (Pirated) Packing List For Baylor StudentS
1. The Essentials
There are a lot of good lists online, but I recommend the one from The College Board to cover all your bases. Alternatively you have this nifty one from Slug Books, which is nice because you can remove items you already have and then print the remaining list.
2. The Inspiration
Having all your stuff doesn't mean it will give your room that extra touch of "fabulous" that it deserves.
If the last comment didn't scare away our male readers, then they are manly enough to use Pinterest - for the forces of GOOD. Check out this official Baylor Dorm Rooms board or this Room Layouts board to get ideas and see some spirited stuff you can buy or make!
Also, somebody try this Dormify thing and tell me how that goes. That looks really sick.

3. The Stuff You forgot
Aw, dang it! I still forgot some stuff, Nathan? What gives?
Never fear, good reader. You might have some of these items. But chances are you'll be thanking me for at least one of the tips I'm about to give you.
Let us begin. For REAL this time.
Baylor students - please trust me on this one. There is nothing worse for you than to use your cell phone as your alarm clock. A REAL alarm clock (or watch) will help you sleep more, wake up more easily, and start your day without the distractions of social media. If you want the studies on how this influences your sleep habits, check out this awesome article on why your phone should stay away from your bedside table.
What, in Texas? Absolutely. Texans know very well how rapidly the temperature can shift in the Lone Star State, and come prepared for that. If you're thinking to yourself, "I'll just bring back winter clothes later in the semester," then you're going to have a hard time during those few days in October when the temperature suddenly plummets.
Many students who previously played instruments leave them at home for extra space or to avoid disturbing the hallmates with their playing. They often regret this. If your instrument is not a piano or timpani, then please pack that thing. You'll be glad you did.
You will not be moving to college, and then moving back home at the end of the semester. Hopefully if you took some of my advice, you'll be enjoying road trips, retreats, and even sleepovers at other friends' dorm rooms. For this you'll want a suitcase, a travel bag for your hygiene products, and extra sheets or a sleeping bag.
See #2 above. It does rain in Texas, contrary to popular belief. And there will always be days when you wished you had boots or an umbrella.
Gentlemen, the day you thank me will be the day that, because you were prepared with an umbrella, you got to escort a pretty girl back to her dorm and score that first date. You're welcome.

Count the number of command strips you have. Done? Good. Count them again.
Now buy more. Trust me - if you have the strips on-hand, you will invent new ways to make your life easier. Bring lots of them.

This tip will be paired with a segment in a future article entitled, "WHAT THE HECK YOU NAÏVE FISH DRINK LOTS OF WATER TIL YOU'RE DROWNING IN IT," which will guest-feature Gordon Ramsay and should come out sometime next month.
In the meantime, take note - water keeps you awake, helps you digest that dining hall food, and boosts your content-memory for those tests. A bottle you can fill on the way to class that you and drink quietly in your seat is a really, really good thing to have.

This is not a drill. You will find a need for a nerf gun. Buy reliability over fancy technology. High dart-capacity is key. This is war.
Pro tip: Pack most of your belongings in plastic bins that can stack, slide under your bed, or go in the upper-closet area. This will make unpacking when you arrive at Baylor so. much. easier.
One of the most "college" things I could ever tell you is this universal law: there is no college student who would not appreciate your Spock Socks.
Ooh, look - I got you started on this cool website. Buy one pair, and get sock-jawed on this strange fad.

A friend of mine mentioned just how amazing these things were, so I checked it out and thought I'd pass it along to you. Especially for you out-of-staters with lots of clothing or bedding, this will make the move-in process much easier. Sic 'em, vacuum technology.
"But Nathan - How Do I Find Space For All This Stuff?"
Good question. Let me help you out a bit with the
List Of Things You Probably Don't Need
Take these with a grain of salt. I'll give a brief explanation of each.
1. A Printer - For most, this is completely redundant. Baylor has many, many printers for you to access with your prepaid Pawprints.
2. Your Letter Jacket - If you planned on looking cool showing off your seven patches...then think again. Get an actual jacket.
3. An Iron/Board - Not only do some halls have them, but you will rarely use this board. I suggest a wrinkle-free wardrobe, or one of these tactics.
4. A Big TV (Unless you like being the host) - Many students bring big T.V.s for their dorm rooms, only to congregate in common areas or others' rooms for most of their entertainment. If you don't like hosting, then don't worry about it. You'll be fine.
5. Your Pet Komodo Dragon - That's a bad idea. Don't do that.
In the end, these are all just items to help you enjoy and make the most of your Baylor experience. If you don't show up on move-in day with some Baylor spirit, a little excitement, and just enough bravery to try something new, then this packing list will not be very helpful to you.
But discovering the incredible future for you at Baylor will occur as soon as you hop out of your locomotive, wondering what to do with all of your carefully-chosen belongings.
Because another Bear will be there, waiting to shake your hand and take your things. We're a team, and that's just how things work at Baylor.
Welcome. :)

Nathan Elequin is a 2016 graduate from the Baylor Business Fellows, Interdisciplinary Core (BIC), and Honors Program. During his four years at Baylor, he sought to encourage and inspire students to take the leap of faith, discovering new friends and adventures during their life-changing experience at Baylor University. Now he is studying Instructional Design and Development at Syracuse University (MS '18) with the hopes of developing software for classroom learning.
I hope this brings you encouragement and prepares you for some of the best years of your life. Whether you are a student at Baylor or anywhere else, I would encourage you to share this poem with them to give them some fire as they begin their journeys.
I am excited for all of you. Sic 'em.
